Restoration by Linn Hergert
All paintings have to be examined with an eye loop to find any signs of damage such as pin holes and crackling.

All information must be recorded in conservitor's notes that stay with the painting, a process that may be time consuming.

Soot burns on some paintings surfaces can be found that are invisible to the naked eye.

Some paintings need to be retouched to cover fire damage that can not be cleaned off of the paintings.

Color matching for retouching involves ordering paint from Italy so that the oils in the paint would match producing the same colors as well as adhesion to the old paint.

Some colors can not be color matched with paints on the market so the correct color paints need to be made by grinding together materials such as pearls shown here, then mixed with linseed oil.

Soot, nicotine, and other airborne particles which cannot be seen by the naked eye need to be removed with a wheat press lift.

After a wheat press lift, paintings need a full brush down cleaning to remove wheat particles that have bonded to other pollutants.
